Growing up in a big traditional household, with many workers/cooks, fuel woods are used consistently for cooking and heating due to its affordability and accessibility. Whenever, I go to the local kitchen, I happen to notice this burning pain in the eyes which sometimes results into tears rolling down. Unfortunately, using these fuel woods affected some of the worker’s eyesight, resulting to complete blindness. This motivated me to research on these woods and learn how to produce a more sustainable, healthier, and eco-friendly alternative that is as cheap, to supplement. I came to know that efficient coals could be produced from biomass wastes generated by smallholder farmers. I saw this problem as an opportunity to help both the planet and the people (most especially women from low income households).
